New weekday-only schedule for Hayward COVID-19 Testing Center:

The City of Hayward COVID19 Testing Center is shifting to a weekday operating schedule, and will be closed all day Saturday and Sunday and reopen at 9 a.m. on Monday, the City announced today.

The schedule change is being made in response to changing levels and patterns of demand at the Center and to free up resources for mobile testing of vulnerable populations such as residents and employees of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

The new hours of operation at the Testing Center—now located in Parking Lot A at Cal State University East Bay—are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Center may shut down earlier on a particular day if demand warrants or the number of available tests for the day are exhausted.

Between March 23 and April 19, specifically trained Hayward Fire Department firefighter-paramedics and partner health clinicians have tested 3,758 people at the Center and other locations—with 414 of individuals found to be positive for infection with the coronavirus contagion that causes COVID-19 disease.

Testing at the Center is free and available to anyone with COVID-19 symptoms and a fever above 100 degrees. Symptoms include cough and shortness of breath. No referral from a medical doctor is required.

Health-care workers and first-responders may make advance appointments for testing by calling the City’s COVID-19 hotline at (510) 583-4949.
Thank you Hayward Fire/Police Dispatchers!! It’s National Public Safety Telecommunicators week, and we want to show our appreciation to our very own Dispatchers that help keep us safe! Thank you! #haywardfirefighters #nationalpublicsafetytelecommunicatorsweek @haywardpolice
Easter Sunday schedule changes for Hayward COVID-19 Testing Center, information hotline:

The City of Hayward COVID-19 Testing Center and telephone information hotline have Easter Sunday schedule changes, with the Testing Center closed all day and the hotline open for calls only in the afternoon from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Testing Center, at Hayward Fire Station #7, 28270 Huntwood Avenue, will reopen at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, returning to its regular operating schedule of Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., or until the maximum number of COVID-19 tests available for the day are exhausted.

The Hayward COVID-19 information hotline, (510) 583-4949, will return to its regular operating schedule at 8 a.m. Monday and be available daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hotline call center provides information and referrals on COVID-19 and supportive resources for local residents and businesses, as well as updates on how the City is adjusting and responding to the public health emergency.

COVID-19 information and updates also are available online at www.hayward-ca.gov/COVID-19.

The COVID-19 Testing Center is free and open to anyone regardless of where they live or immigration status. No doctor referral is required. However, testing is available only to people age 12 and above with COVID-19 symptoms and a fever over 100 degrees. Symptoms include cough and shortness of breath.

Health-care workers and first responders can schedule advance appointments by calling the COVID-19 information hotline, (510) 583-4949.

The Testing Center was established by the Hayward Fire Department to take pressure off hospital emergency rooms, provide quicker answers for first responders and health care workers with COVID-19 symptoms, and better inform members of the general public so they know to isolate if infected with the COVID-19 coronavirus.

In coordination with the Alameda County Department of Public Health, the Testing Center also is deploying teams to provide COVID-19 testing at nursing homes and for other community members considered most in need based on their living and health. #haywardfirefighters
UPDATE. The City of Hayward announced today updated information on new hours of operation and testing guidelines for its COVID-19 Testing Center.

Updated Hours of Operation: Generally, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday or until the maximum available number of tests for the day are exhausted.

Updated Testing Criteria: At the direction of the Alameda County Health Officer, members of the general public must be symptomatic for COVID-19 infection and have a fever over 100 degrees in order to be tested. COVID-19 symptoms include a cough and shortness of breath.

Fifty-four of 207 people who were tested on the first day of operation of the City of Hayward’s new COVID-19 Testing Center on Monday had positive test results for the infection.

Samples that test positive at the City’s partner laboratory, Avellino Lab of Menlo Park, are retested and the results are reported immediately to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Confirmed positive results also are shared immediately by Hayward Fire Department medical clinicians with the person found to have the infection—and later are reported by Hayward to public health officials in the county of residence of the individual.

In most cases, people who test positive through the Hayward Center will learn the results in six hours or by the next day.

Differing county-by-county protocols may mean that results from the Hayward Testing Center will be added to each county’s aggregate confirmed case total in different ways and at different intervals.

The City of Hayward intends to publicly report positive result approximately 48 hours after each day’s testing. It is disclosing the information to help residents understand the prevalence of coronavirus infection and reiterate the importance of compliance with shelter-in-place orders and other social distancing and hygiene precautions.

The Testing Center, at Hayward Fire Station #7, 28270 Huntwood Avenue in South Hayward, is scheduled to open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Generally, the Center, in partnership with Avellino Lab, will be able to process up to 370 samples a day—though daily maximums will fluctuate.

On Thursday and potentially Friday, the number of tests taken at the Center will be reduced and the Center will close early to allow testing teams of Hayward firefighter-paramedics to conduct mobile targeted testing of vulnerable populations elsewhere in the community.

The City of Hayward announced today new traffic and line management controls for its COVID-19 Testing Center.

People will be able to join drive-up and walk-up lines up until 10 a.m. each morning and again between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the afternoon—or until the test site approaches the maximum number of tests that can be performed that day.

The changes are being put in place to ensure safe distancing between pedestrians, manageable vehicle traffic and that enough tests are available for people with qualifying symptoms and conditions waiting to be tested.

On this very night 18 years ago...246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift. None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted. #343 #neverforget #haywardfirefighters
